That old grist mill that has been photographed a million times.

Spent a couple days roaming the hills deep in West Virginia looking for color. I wasn't disappointed. This is Glade Creek Grist Mill, located in the New River Gorge.

Found this driving the back roads of West Virginia. Wasn’t in operation this early in the spring though.

The Glade Creek Grist Mill.

First time shooting the mill. I was told that light was favorable until 9am and I got there just in time. I didn't have time to find another vantage point as the morning sun was already starting to blow out the top of the scene. I'll have to return here in the fall to shoot it from a few more vantage points.

Babcock State Park, West Virginia

Babcock State Park is situated on 4,127 acres of beautifully scenic woodlands in the New River Gorge area. The Glade Creek Mill is found close to the park headquarters. It is now probably one of the most photographed buildings in all the West Virginia State Parks. Visitors can tour the building and even buy the corn meal and buckwheat flour that it produces.

South of Charleston WV off HWY 60 you'll find one of the most photographed Mills in the USA.

The Glade Creek Grist Mill is beautiful at all times of the year and is free to visit. Watch the local weather, especially in Winter for the right conditions to be there.

I've pretty much exhausted my favorite eagle photos so now I'm back to West Virginia. Here's another angle of the Glade Creek Grist Mill and falls at close to peak color.

Part 2 of my West Virginia photo outing. The Grist Mill looks great any time of the year! Great to finally see it in person!

On the way to the New River Gorge bridge, I stopped by Babcock State Park. I'd never seen the Grist Mill before and I wanted to take some test shots for a fall trip (someday). Initially, I didn't even take my tripod out. However, the trees looked good and the creek had a nice flow so back to the car I went!

Well, during my vacation this week, I've been treated to rain every day until today. So, I decided to drive 3 1/2 hours to the southern part of West Virginia to enjoy some of the beautiful fall foliage. I got on the road by 4:30 this morning and I'm glad I did because this particular grist mill, located in Babcock State Park, is a very popular photographic destination. The place was crawling with us photogs. :) Plus, it's not nearly as easy to photograph once the sun hits it, so you really need to go early or late.

Also, a bit of advice... early in the morning, the rocks are, um, kinda slick! So be careful! (No, I didn't fall in, but almost!) :)

West Virginia is gorgeous this time of year. The colors in this part of the state are at peak right now. Where I live, they've barely started to turn.

I love this old mill in Babcock State Park, West Virginia. I processed the photo with Midjourney, borrowing a prompt from a Flickr friend, and my Midjourney tutor, Pete Vielhaber. I changed the subject matter of Pete's prompt to fit my photo, then added an additional artist, Thomas Kinkaid. I did some post-processing with Photoshop and Topaz (Don't ask me what, because, unlike Pete, I can never remember!). You can find Pete's awesome work here: HTML link code: Glorious Lost Sundays

Thanks again, Pete, for all your help, generosity, and kindness.

Late night at Glade Creek Grist Mill.

Babcock State Park, West Virginia.

Fully operable, this mill was built as a re-creation of a previous one that once ground grain on Glade Creek. Known as Cooper’s Mill, it stood near the present location in West Virginia's Babcock State Park .

Top 10 place to shoot. (For me).

From our weekend road trip:

Hidden deep in the Appalachian Mountains near the New River Gorge sits an extremely photogenic grist mill. A recreation of the original mills that dotted West Virginia, Glade Creek Grist Mill was completed in 1976 at Babcock SP. Built fully operational from the parts of 3 other WV mills, it was placed near the site of the former Cooper's Mill.

Last year the Glade Creek was flowing a lot more heavily. One of the beautiful things about photography in nature: It's different all the time.

I was able to spend some time in the New River Gorge region with good friends just before and during last week's snow storm. It was tough shooting in the almost constant whiteout conditions, but we caught a little break Friday afternoon and made our way to the mill.

This years color and water flow didn't coordinate very well, so I'm sharing an older image that I just got around to processing recently. Thanks for taking a look!
